"Friday Patch" - Traditional Patch - Homage to the 7th Fighter Group and the visual traditions of combat aviation

This patch is an expression of the direct link between our squadron and the honorable legacy of the 7th Fighter Group, one of the most prestigious air units of Romania during the Second World War. This link is represented by one of the leading pilots of the 7th Fighter Group, Aviator Captain Alexandru Serbanescu, ace of the Romanian aviation and the one after whom today, the 95th Air Base bears its name.

The patch uses the figure of the legendary Donald Duck, a symbol often found in the squadrons of the 7th Fighter Group. At that time, the pilots used to personalize their planes with various drawings, mascots or inscriptions - a mixture of humor, superstition and the spirit of camaraderie. In an environment where missions were risky and lives were always in danger, these symbols brought a touch of humanity and cohesion between the crew members.

Disney characters were among the most frequently encountered on fighter planes, Donald Duck mainly due to his "boisterous" attitude, determined, sometimes unlucky, but never defeated. Donald embodied exactly what a fighter pilot often felt: frustration, courage, stubbornness, but also humor in the face of adversity.

In addition to mascots, pilots had a tradition since World War I for each of them to inscribe their names, personal messages or nicknames on the plane. An emblematic example is the Messerschmitt Bf 109E plane, number 9, piloted by Ioan Di Cesare, another ace of the Romanian aviation, which bore the inscription "Hai fetito!", the name of a horse he had bet on at the Hippodrome. This practice, borrowed in part from our German and American allies, reflects the personal attachment to the aircraft we pilot and the way each pilot manifests their identity in combat.

Our patch, featuring the image of Donald Duck and evoking these traditions, represents a discreet but profound homage to a generation of pilots who flew with courage and honor. By preserving these visual elements, our squadron continues a line of informal but identitarian tradition that transcends the ages.

Through this patch, the squadron reaffirms the importance of historical memory and its role in preserving and transfusing the values of Romanian military aviation. They are not just graphic symbols, but true visual testimonies of the spirit, continuity and dignity that define this elite weapon.

Air Base 95 "Erou capitan aviator Alexandru Șerbănescu" of the Romanian Air Force is a military air base located near the "George Enescu" International Airport (IATA Code BCM, ICAO Code LRBC) and the 630th Paratroopers Battalion "Smaranda Brăescu"A in the municipality of Bacău.

It is structured into:

951st Aviation School Squadron - operates IAR-99 ȘOIM and MiG-21 LancerR
952nd Helicopter Squadron - operates IAR 330L

History

It was initially established on July 4, 1920 in Tecuci under the name "Aviation Training Center", which had the mission of training navigational, technical and other specialties necessary for Romanian aviation.

In 1924, reorganizations of the aeronautics took place, the base being renamed the "Aeronautics Training Center". After World War II, the base was restructured and relocated, operating in the towns of Mediaș and Buzău. In 1953, the "Aeronautics Training Center" was abolished, the tasks being taken over by other educational institutions.

On December 1, 1968, the base was re-established on the Bacău airfield, being subordinated to the Territorial Air Defense Command.

Starting with January 1, 1969, the "Aviation Training Center" participated in the transition of young pilots on the supersonic MiG 21 aircraft, simultaneously with the fulfillment of missions specific to an aviation unit.

In 1971, the Training Center had three squadrons: two with supersonic aircraft and one with subsonic jets: IAR-99 ŞOIM JP7145831

Squadron 1: MiG-21 Pfm, brought from Mihail Kogălniceanu Aerodrome;
Squadron 2: MiG-21 Pf and MiG-21 F-13;
Squadron 3: MiG-15

Over time, the unit has ensured the transition to supersonic aircraft of over 500 pilots and the specialized training of over 6,000 military aviation personnel.

On August 25, 1995, according to the Order of the Ministry of National Defense no. MP-588[2], was renamed "95th Fighter and Fighter-Bombing Air Base"[1] with the code 02015, intended to ensure the preparation and conduct of combat actions of the 95th Fighter Group with the code 01975.[2] The base has since the beginning ensured the research and testing of the MiG-21 LanceR aircraft at the Aerostar S.A. Bacău factory.

In 2001, the 60th Helicopter Group Tecuci was disbanded and part of the helicopters were assigned to the 95th Air Base Bacău until May 1, 2001.

Starting with May 1, 2001, the base was transformed into the "95th Supersonic Aircraft Transition Center" and the 95th Fighter Aviation Group was transformed into a fighter-bomber squadron and a fighter squadron within the 95th Supersonic Aircraft Transition Center, so that in 2004, it was renamed into the "95th Air Base Bacău" by the C.S.A.T. Decision no. S/11 of January 21, 2004 and the General Staff Order no. B5/S/1062 of May 12, 2004”.

By Presidential Decree no. 163/of May 27, 2006, the military unit was awarded the Battle Flag.

Starting with December 1, 2006, according to DR-3307 of November 1, 2006, the 95th Air Base was given the honorary title “Hero Captain Aviator Alexandru Șerbănescu”.
